The following is an exerpt from an email received Tuesday November 23 from Professor R. Psaki (chair of the University Library Committee) rpsaki@OREGON.UOREGON.EDU
This is my understanding of the matter: the cancellations NOW under (re-)consideration are not new ones. The faculty was asked to approve $500,000 in serials cancellations several years ago, as you know better than I!, and only $200,000 of them had to be implemented at once. The library budget has now been hit with an unforeseen "decrement" (any word to avoid saying "cut"), which makes the librarian and the library committee feel that it is time to implement the rest of the serials cancellations. No one likes this. The only good news is that the cuts are not new. Because there have been changes in serials publications and subscriptions in the interim, the faculty will be asked to confirm (or revise) the cuts, but the amount is $300,000, and we will be asked to begin doing this in the beginning of winter term, with cancelled subscriptions taking effect for next fiscal year.
The University Librarian will be sending a letter to all faculty in early December which provides more information on the cancellations. In early January, the departments will receive the lists of journal titles previously deselected, three years ago, to review and the target amounts which need to be cut from each fund
