From gwens@OREGON.UOREGON.EDU Tue Oct 12 15:05:40 1999 Date: Tue, 12 Oct 1999 15:06:11 -0700 From: Gwen Steigelman Subject: PTRAC vacancy X-Sender: gwens@oregon.uoregon.edu To: gilkey@darkwing.uoregon.edu Cc: jrice@OREGON.UOREGON.EDU, lgd@OREGON.UOREGON.EDU MIME-version: 1.0 Dear Peter, This morning I was contacted by Associate Vice Provost Jack Rice concerning a vacancy that has arisen on the Personnel/Retention/Tenure Appeal Committee (PTRAC) due to a resignation by Mike Hibbard. The committee has immediate work on a grievance which requires a response in a 60 days time frame. Current PTRAC members are Dick Koch, mathematics, and Paul Goldman, educational leadership, technology & administration; the alternate is Charlie Wright, but he also is in the mathematics department and duplicate representation of departments considering a grievance is precluded, so he is ineligible for this grievance. The procedure for filling vacancies on elected faculty committees instructs the secretary of the faculty to appoint the next highest vote receiver in the most recent election. As you are aware, there was an insufficient number of nominees for that committee to have an election, hence there currently is no one "waiting in the wings" for me to appoint. In such a case, other legislation guides to me seek assistance from the senate in filling the vacancy. Consequently, I am requesting your assistance, in consultation with the Senate Executive Committee, to identify a member of the faculty whom I can appoint to this important committee. The immediate need is for someone to fill in for this particular grievance; however, due to Mike's resignation, it is preferable to identify someone who is willing to serve a full three-year term. I am in the process of compiling a list of faculty members who are eligible to serve on PTRAC and will forward that list to you in the near future. Committee memberships requires previous service on the Faculty Personnel Committee, but not within the last two years, and someone who is not currently an administrator (associate dean or higher level). I appreciate any assistance you and the Senate Executive Committee can provide in filling this vacancy. Thank you, Gwen Steigelman Secretary of the Faculty From gilkey@darkwing.uoregon.edu Mon Oct 18 07:36:33 1999 Date: Mon, 18 Oct 1999 07:37:08 -0700 From: Peter B Gilkey X-Accept-Language: en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: gwens@oregon.uoregon.edu, jrice@darkwing.uoregon.edu Subject: PTRAC Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; x-mac-type="54455854"; x-mac-creator="4D4F5353" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Length: 1854 MEMO TO: Gwen Steigelman (Secretary of the Faculty) MEMO RE: Vacancy on PTRAC MEMO FROM: Peter B Gilkey (UO Senate President 1999/2000) Dear Gwen: This is pursuant to your directive to consult with the Senate Executive Committee and to recommend a replacement to fill the vacancy on PTRAC which was caused by the recent resignation from PTRAC of Professor Mike Hibbard when he became department head. Since PTRAC has urgent business awaiting it, I proceeded as expeditiously as possible to deal with your request. I consulted with all the members of the Senate Executive Committee. I owe a particular debt of gratitude to Senate Executive Committee member Professor Margie Paris; she helped me narrow the original list that you sent me to a much smaller subset and gave me cogent and well formulated advice on the matter. I believe that Professor Helen Gernon would make an excellent appointment to PTRAC; the Senate Executive Committee concurs. Professor Gernon was Vice Chair of the Faculty Personnel Committee during 1997/8 and would bring great experience in personnel matters to the PTRAC.I spoke to Professor Gernon on the phone last Wednesday and she agreed to fill the vacancy on PTRAC if appointed by you. It is my great pleasure and honor therefore as President of the UO Senate for 1999/2000 respectfully to recommend that you appoint Professor Helen Gernon as exeditiously as possible to PTRAC and that you communicate to her the real enthusiasm that I and the members of the Senate Executive Committee feel concerning her appointment. We are grateful she is willing to give of her time and and of her wisdom in serving on this important committee. I await your response on this matter eagerly; I am also copying this email to Jack Rice as the original request originated with him and as I am sure he also is concerned about the matter.
