ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
Responsible for the administration and interpretation of academic requirements
for undergraduate degrees, and for action on student petitions for exceptions
to requirements and to other academic regulations.
Not fixed by legislation except for addition of 3 students (Faculty legis. 1/76). Traditionally includes 7-8 faculty, 3 students, plus Academic Advising Dir. or designee (ex officio), Financial Aid Dir. or designee (ex officio ), and Registrar as Secretary (ex officio, nonvoting). (Not legislated, but students should be advanced students -- junior or senior or graduate)
COMMITTEE ON COURSES
Screens all proposals for course changes and new courses; reports its
recommendations by quarterly reports to the faculty through the University
Senate; advises the University editor on content and structure of the UO
Undergraduate and Graduate Bulletin.
Fixed. 7 faculty (for staggered, 3-year terms) -- no 2 from the same dept. nor more than 2 from the same College or School, with the exception of up to 4 from the College of Arts and Sciences (no more than 2 from any one of the three CAS divisions of Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities); 1 student (1-year term), plus the following ex officio, nonvoting members: Catalog Editor, Director of Academic Advising or designee, Registrar or designee.
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARDS/HONORARY DEGREES
Reviews nominations, recommends recipients of honorary degrees and
annual UO awards for distinguished service to the state and region.
Fixed. 5 ìteaching facultyî, plus the following ex officio members: UO President or designee (chair), Advisory Council chair, University Senate president, Graduate Council chair, Alumni director, ASUO president, and Student Senate chair.
DISTINGUISHED TEACHING AWARDS
Solicits nominations and selects recipients of Ersted Award, Faculty
Achievement Award, and other university-wide awards for distinguished teaching.
Membership fixed. At least 4 and not more than 8 faculty, 1 student, plus Vice Provost for Academic Personnel (ex officio, nonvoting).
FOREIGN STUDY PROGRAMS
Reviews and approves academic standards in foreign study programs of
the University granting academic credit; reviews new program proposals.

INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS ADVISORY COUNCIL
Advises Vice Provost for International Affairs on the implementation
of UO strategic plan for internationalization.

Chair, Foreign Study Programs Committee; Director, International Education & Exchange; Director, International Studies Program or designee; Chairs (or designees) of Asian Studies Committee, Russian/East European Studies Committee, Latin American Studies Committee, and European Studies Committee; 3 additional teaching faculty for staggered two-year terms; 1 student appointed by ASUO Student Senate President and 1 student appointed by ISAC. Council elects its own chair for a one-year term from among appointed faculty representatives.
JOHNSON MEMORIAL AWARD COMMITTEE
Reviews nominations, selects recipient for annual award to faculty
member who, as teacher/scholar/citizen of the academic community, exemplifies
commitment to principles affirmed in life and career of Charles E. Johnson.
Not fixed. Traditionally 3-4 faculty, Secretary of the Faculty (ex officio), rep. of Faculty Advisory Council (ex officio).
LIBRARY
Advises President and Librarian on policies/procedures of UO Library.
Not fixed except for addition of 2 students (Fac. legis. 4/16/69). Traditionally 9-10 faculty, 2 students, plus Librarian (ex officio).
R.O.T.C. ADVISORY
Advises President, the faculty, and the military departments on the
ROTC program at UO; reviews and recommends on appointments to the University
of Oregonís Department of Military Science; conducts on-site interviews
with nominees.
Fixed. A chairman, to be designated by the President from the civilian faculty of the University, plus two additional members appointed by President from civilian faculty; senior officer of the ROTC program (ex officio), Provost or designee (ex officio, nonvoting), 3 students. All vote except chair who votes only in case of a tie.
SCHOLASTIC REVIEW
Administration/interpretation of policy for students whose work falls
below UO scholarship requirements; rules on petitions for reinstatement/change
of grade.
Not fixed except for addition of 4 student members (Fac. legis. 1/14/76). Traditionally 7-9 faculty, 4 students, and the following ex officio members: Registrar, ALS Director, Multicultural Affairs Director or designee, 2 rep. from Academic Advising.
STATUS OF WOMEN
Advisory to President, faculty, and students in developing affirmative
action programs; stimulates career development programs for women, and
encourages greater participation by women in academic governance.
Not fixed, although 6/72 legis. stipulates that it ìshall include members from both sexes and from the classified, faculty, and student constituencies.î Traditionally 9-10 faculty, 2 classified, 1 mgmt. service, 3 students, plus Dir. Affirm. Action (ex officio).
STUDENT CONDUCT
Recommends policy relating to student conduct; administers the Student
Conduct Code. [Student Conduct Hearing Board For conduct cases to
be handled by formal hearing, this Board hears the case, listens to evidence,
decides if Student Conduct Code has been violated, and determines which,
if any, sanctions to impose.]
Fixed. 4 faculty, 4 students, Housingís advisor to Dormitory Governance Committee (ex officio, nonvoting), Student Conduct Coordinator, Sec. (ex officio, nonvoting). Committee to elect its own permanent chair.
STUDENT CONDUCT HEARINGS BOARD
The Hearings Board is a pool of eight faculty (both officers of instruction
and officers of administration) and ten students. When there is a decision
to handle a student conduct case by means of a formal hearing, which happens
about 5-7 times a year, a panel of two faculty and three students will
be drawn from the Board to hear the case. The panel will listen to evidence,
decide if the Student Conduct Code has been violated, and determine which,
if any, sanctions to impose, ranging from a warning to expulsion from the
University. Hearings usually take place on campus in the evenings. Most
are confidential in order to protect the privacy of student educational
records.
STUDENT-FACULTY COMMITTEE ON GRIEVANCES
Receives, investigates, and reviews complaints by students against
faculty members (concerning academic responsibilities) and makes recommendations
to the President.
Not fixed, but legislation stipulates that there be an equal number of faculty and student members. Traditionally 4 faculty, 4 students.
SUMMER RESEARCH AWARDS
Reviews applications for grants in aid of research from University
funds allocated for this purpose and presents recommendations.
Not fixed. Vice Provost for Research or designee, Chair (ex officio).
8-10 faculty active in research, plus Office of Research Services and Administration
rep. (ex officio).
TENURE REDUCTION, RETIREMENT AND THE EMERITI
Advises faculty and administration on policy and practice concerning
tenure reduction, retirement, rights of emeriti.
Fixed. Three faculty to include at least one emeritus/emerita prof. and one faculty member who has signed up for tenure reduction program, plus the UO Benefits Officer (ex officio, nonvoting), Vice Provost for Acad. Personnel. (ex officio, nonvoting).
UNIVERSITY APPEALS BOARD
The final appeals body under the Student Conduct Code.
