September 2002 Faculty Leadership Caucus: Synthesis and Action Points
On Sept. 23rd members of the Senate Executive Committee, Senate Budget
Committee, Faculty Advisory Council, and past Senate presidents met all
day to discuss setting an agenda for faculty concerns and goals for the
coming year. Here is summary of their discussion.
1. American Association of Universities StatusÑdiscuss how that
affects the University, its faculty and the priorities in the UO Capital
Campaign --consider how it affects the image that the University presents
of itself, ie. its image for public consumption
--it is important to strengthen our role as a member of the AAU (important
for student and faculty recruitment)
--we've asked the administration for a document elaborating on the significance
and process for maintaining AAU membership
2. Communication and Operational links between The Strategic Directions
document/ Mission Statement, and the Capital Campaign
--we should use the Mission Statement as preface to the Strat. Dir. Doc.
--we need to articulate the democratic / academic / humanistic principles
of the Mission Statement in relation to the goal of economic development
emphasized in the Str. Dir. Doc.
3. Meaningful Faculty Input to Capital Campaign:
--faculty need to be co-authors of the Capital Campaign
--we need a continuous conversation between The Senate Exec., FAC, &
Cap. Campaign advisory committee
--suggestions from the faculty to Deans and Department heads should also
be synthesized by the faculty leadership groups above
4. Guiding Principles for the Capital Campaign: --there may be additional
principles beyond maintaining AAU status
--we need to clarify the identity of the U. of O. as a public university
--Campaign should also spell out connections to the Mission Statement;
should we make principles such as diversity, humanistic learning, etc part
of the Capital Campaign?
5. Faculty Governance:
--Anticipate and address ways the Compact with Oregon might impact faculty
governance.
-Build on current relationship between faculty governance structure and
the administration: how do we preserve the good relationship that we have?
--we should track the effectiveness of faculty governance
6. University Agenda for Athletics:
--should we have "donor tax/ sharing" so that $ also goes to academics?
--address the concern that the UO games are broadcast on a radio station
that broadcasts extreme "propaganda" that undermines the mission of the
university
--consider using technology (Duckvision) during games to advertise faculty/
UO academic programs in addition to athletics
7. Size of Institution/Enrollment:
--address concerns over growing enrollment; is there an increase in faculty
size?
8. Salary IssuesÑwe should continue to strive for the SBC White
Paper goals
