    Foreword

    Every office and department on campus uses publications—to provide information about programs and classes, announce events, or solicit support. It’s a relatively inexpensive way of communicating with a large number of people.

    The editors and designers in Creative Publishing help you get the results you want from your publications and at the same time project a positive, consistent, and accurate image of the university. We provide a complete, professional publications service. Our staff is your liaison with the printer, whether on or off campus.

    Creative Publishing is located in 101 Chapman Hall;
    telephone (541) 346-5396.

    Introduction

    As a client of Creative Publishing, your primary responsibility lies in developing and writing the text for your publication, keeping foremost in mind your purpose and your audience. Consistent standards for the presentation of this material have been developed for the University of Oregon and are provided in this publication to serve as guidelines for your project. Rather than inhibiting your message, consistent capitalization and punctuation free you to concentrate on more substantial matters.

    You may wonder why this guide includes grammatical as well as stylistic guidelines. The internal university communications that cross our desks provide ample evidence that the members of our campus community, regardless of their levels of expertise in other areas, can use some friendly reminders about the rules of American English grammar.

    This guide draws heavily on two resources— The Chicago Manual of Style fourteenth edition (1993), and The American Heritage Electronic Dictionary, fourth edition (online version). By repeating important principles here and using examples that are close to home, we hope to save you the time and trouble of having to find these things out for yourselves.

    Still, this guide doesn’t aspire to answer every question about grammar and style. It’s just a beginning.
