The University
of Oregon's undergraduate degree requirements are listed in each term's
Schedule of Classes, are
given in the "Registration and Academic Polices" section of
the UO Catalog,
and are also available in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) from the
Office of the Registrar.
Students who declare a philosophy major after Spring 1997 must complete
the following requirements.
Students declaring in the Fall of 2002 and after should note the change
in the logic requirement
- Students whose
first and only major is philosophy must satisfy the University of Oregon’s
bachelor of arts (B. A.) degree requirements including competence
in a foreign language to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in
philosophy. Only students who complete a different first major and the
bachelor of science (B. S.) degree requirements may fulfill philosophy
requirements as a second major without completing the requirements for
a B.A. degree.
- Students must satisfy
the following departmental requirements.
- 52 credit
hours in Philosophy courses of which 40 must be upper-division
hours. These courses must include:
- Three courses
in the history of philosophy:
Philosophy 310
History of Philosophy: Ancient and Medieval,
Philosophy 311
History of Philosophy: Modern,
Philosophy 312
History of Philosophy: 19th Century.
- Eight credits
of course work dealing with the works of specific philosophers (e.g.,
Plato, Kant, Dewey, or Beauvoir) offered at the 400-level. These
are also called "Authors" courses.
- Logic Requirement:
Students who declared their major in the Fall of 2002 or after may
take Philosophy 325, Logic, Argumentation, and Inquiry or
Philosophy 461, Symbolic Logic or an equivalent course
approved by the Director of Undergraduate Studies. Students who
have declared their major prior to Fall 2002 may also satisfy their
logic requirement with Philosophy 103, Critical Reasoning.
- Students must
receive a grade of C- or better in their major courses. No more than
8 hours of the 52 may be taken pass/no pass.
Transfer students
must complete at least 20 credits of upper division coursework in the
University of Oregon Philosophy department.
Students who intend
to do graduate work in philosophy are strongly urged to prepare themselves
by acquiring a good reading knowledge of a second language appropriate
to their interests.
Students interested
in graduate study in philosophy should also plan to complete Philosophy
461, Symbolic Logic.
To declare
a philosophy major or minor, come to the department office, 338
PLC, to
complete the declaration form (Undergraduate Request for Addition or
Deletion of Major/Minor/Professional Objective). This form will
need to be signed by a Philosophy Department Adviser.
