Students with previous background in Japanese, or those who are returning to the program after a break in its sequence are required to take a placement test examination when wishing to enroll in a class above JPN101.

The placement test is intended to help students by evaluating their ability to speak, listen, read, and write Japanese. The placement test consists of (1) a written exam and (2) an oral interview. You must take both of them. The results of the test are used to assess the student's proper level in the program.

Take the written test, and then schedule an oral interview.

1. Written exam :
given at the Testing Center (238 Student Health & Counseling Center). The test is available anytime except during the campuswide orientation period and long breaks. Contact them at 346-3230 to check their office hours.
The test consists of four major parts: (1) Listening Comprehension, (2) Grammar and expressions, (3) Writing and (4) Reading. There is no time limit on the test but most students need 1 to 2 hours to complete the test.

Please note that the test is designed to assess the skills at the 1st year through the 5th year levels, so some of the questions may be difficult. The purpose of the test is to assess your overall skill level, so you should try to do your best. The test is a part of the data to be used to determine the proper class(es) for the student. We will discuss the student's academic goals, plans for graduation and so forth after the oral interview.

2. Oral interview :
given by the Japanese program coordinator in her office (410 Friendly Hall). The Testing Center will send the student's test to the coordinator by a campus mail. Students wanting to be placed immediately should take the test to 318 Friendly Hall as soon as possible. The student must contact the coordinator by e-mail at jpn@oregon.uoregon.edu If you don't have an access to e-mail, you can call at 346-0047 (Naoko Nakadate) to make an appointment.
The interview is conducted in Japanese and is approximately 15 to 20 minutes. After discussing your plans and goals in English, the coordinator will determine your class(es).
After the class is determined, you need to fill out a preauthorization form and get the coordinator's signature. Take the form to the department's secretary (Michael Bordossi) in 308 Friendly Hall, and he will input data and preauthorize you for the class(es).
Be sure to register for the class(es) by Duck Web or Duck Call!
