Listening

  1. Able to understand speech which describes familiar environments in daily life,hobbies, experiences, etc.
  2. Able to understand conversational speech about simple familiar social situations(experiences with different cultures, familiar environmental issues, etc.) which do notinclude many unknown words
  3. Able to listen to conversations in various speech styles and understand therelationship between the speaker and the people / things which are being discussed
Text Type:statements / conversations in short paragraphs using conjunctions
Speaking (OPI: Intermediate-mid)
  1. Able to describe familiar daily surroundings
  2. Able to talk about one's own or acquaintances, likes / dislikes, hobbies, experiences,etc.
  3. Able to express cause and effect, etc.
  4. Able to make simple comments about current events in society
  5. Able to use appropriate speech levels such as superior / inferior, male / female speech styles in limited situations based upon knowledge of Japanese social conventions
  6. Able to speak spontaneously without being hindered by a few mistakes
  7. Able to make simple paraphrases
Text Type: short paragraph explanations using basic conjunctions


Reading

  1. Within a limited amount of time, able to grasp the contents of rather long reading materials which mainly use previously-known kanji and vocabulary (able to answer questions about or report on the contents)
  2. Able to answer questions about the contents of authentic materials which have been carefully chosen for the learners (i.e., Japanese textbooks for the higher grades of elementary school); able to seek explanations of parts that are unclear
  3. Able to read authentic hand-written materials (postcards, letters, memos, etc.)
  4. Able to recognize the difference between the written and spoken word
  5. Able to read about 600 - 700 kanji (including the Chinese readings)
  6. Able to use dictionaries such as a kanji - English dictionary
Writing
  1. Using a model showing the format, able to write to a certain degree formal letters of thanks, request, etc.(letters of correspondence)
  2. In a short time, able to write a concise, easily understood memo
  3. Using basic conjunctions and certain expressions which have been taught, able to write a relevent essay in a few paragraphs; the topics include familiar daily life topics or ones which have been discussed in class (college life, expreiences with foreign cultures, etc.
  4. In a format similar to (3), able to simply state and give a simple explanation for one's opinion on the above topics
  5. Able to summarize the main points of written material about familiar daily life topics
  6. Able to write about 250 kanji
