Listening

1. Able to understand questions and speech about oneself and others
2. Able to understand conversations from basic daily life situations(slightly complex situations involving shopping, ordering at a restaurant, street directions, using public transportation, making simple reservations, being ill, etc.)
3. Able to listen to conversations and distinguish speech-style differences between men and women, superiors and inferiors
4. Able to understand conversations which use basic conjunctions
5. Able to listen to public announcements which would be often heard in daily life (department stores, train stations, etc.) and catch detailed information

Text Type: all sentence using basic conjunctions

1. Without using a dictionary, able to understand the general idea of compositions which are composed of several paragraphs about ordinary topics or social issues (ones centered around grasping facts) which include some unknown kanji,vocabulary, and grammar
2. Able to grasp detailed information from compositions which do not include unknown kanji, vocabulary, and grammar
3. Able to read about 300 kanji (including the Chinese readings)
4. Able to grasp information from authentic materials such as simple memos or letters (including some hand-written ones) containing messages,requests, explanations, etc.
5. Able to get the general gist of personal letters reporting the present situation

Writing

1. Without using a model, able to write a composition (explanation or description) about a topic concerning one's experiences or lifestyle (travel, work, friends, etc.)
2. Referring to a model, able to write a letter to a familiar person expressing thanks,a request, or an inquiry, and be able to write a reply to such a letter
3. Referring to a model, able to fill out a simple document or form
4. Able to write all of the above using a consistent tense
5. Able to write compositions using basic conjunctions
6. Able to write basic kanji (see list)
7. Able to write about 150 kanji
