Reading

Able to read about common topics in newspapers, magazines, novels, etc.
and understand the theme or plot and guess the content from context without
using a dictionary (looking up key words in a dictionary is allowed)

Able to grasp information from a variety of written authentic material
necessary in Japan such as advertisements, explanatory instructions, public
notices, letters from the student's major field of study, without using
a dictionary for simple material and using a dictionary to look up key
words, etc. for difficult readings

Able to understand in detail readings above one's level by using a dictionary

Able to read about 1,000 kanji (including the Chinese readings)
Able to identify kanji radicals; be accustomed to using a kanji dictionary
Writing

Able to decide on a topic by oneself and develop an essay about it

Able to write one's impressions and opinions on a written text

Able to pull out the necessary information from a text, summarize, and
report on it

Using expressions which describe the context and the relation of cause
and effect, able to write compositions which grasp overall characteristics
from concrete facts

Able to fill out various kinds of forms (resume, etc.)

Using a model, able to verify concretely certain facts, opinions, common
views, etc.

Able to create a poem, haiku, a simple story
