Listening

  1. Able to understand simple questions and speech about oneself and others
  2. Able to understand a minimal level of information necessary for daily life in previously-learned situations (asking simple street directions, shopping,ordering at arestaurant, invitations, etc.)

  3. Able to listen to public announcements found in daily life and understand crucial information to a certain degree


Speaking (OPI: Novice-High)

  1. Able to handle basic survival situations in Japanese (asking for street directions,shopping, ordering at a restaurant, etc.)
  2. Able to give a simple self-introduction, talk about one's hometown, family, friends,hobbies, likes and dislikes
  3. Able to give invitations to others and accept or decline invitations from others
Text Type: mainly sentence


Reading

  1. Able to understand the content of reading materials about familiar topics written within the scope of previously-learned kanji, vocabulary, and grammar
  2. Able to understand the general idea or plot of reading materials (including postcards and letters)which contain some unknown kanji, vocabulary, and grammar
  3. Able to read katakana and hiragana; able to read about 150 basic kanji (including the Chinese readings)

  4. Able to understand authentic materials such as train station signs, menus, simple advertisements, daily schedules, invitations, basic information necessary for travel


Writing

  1. Referring to a model, able to write a composition such as a diary (what one did, specific information about one's family, etc.)
  2. Able to write a simple explanation about one's surroundings (one's town, friends,dormitory, apartment, etc.)
  3. Able to write a simple memo (schedule, list, etc.)
  4. Without a model, able to write a short composition on a given topic
  5. Able to write using kanji which pertain to things related to daily life (see list)
  6. Able to write kanji while referring to the textbook or a dictionary
  7. Able to write about 100 kanji
