Exemptions and Waivers Students who score 710 or above on the verbal section of the College Board (CB) recentered Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) or on the Achievement Test in English Composition (EN) will be awarded an exemption from the first term of the requirement, WR 121. No credit hours are awarded for this exemption. Students who score 5 on the College Board Advanced Placement (AP) English Literature and Composition exam, or a 4 or 5 on the AP English Language and Composition exam, will satisfy the entire requirement and receive 6 hours of transfer credit in writing. Students with a score of 4 on the AP English Literature and Composition or a 3 on the AP English Langauge and Composition exam, will satisfy the first term of the requirement, WR 121, and receive 3 hours of transfer credit. A score of 3 on the AP English Language and Composition exam satisfies no part of the requirement and provides no credit. Separate waiver examinations for WR 121 and WR 122 are offered once each term (except Summer sessions) by the Testing Office (238 Student Health Center, phone 346-3230). Tests are usually administered during Thursday and Friday of the first week of each regular term. Successful completion of either exam earns a waiver of the course only: no credit hours are awarded for passing these exams. Although open to any student, these exams are most appropriate for exceptionally proficient writers. The WR122 waiver exam is available only to students who have completed or tested out of WR 121. Students may not attempt both the WR 121 and the WR 122 exam during the same quarter. A complete description of these exams is available from the Testing Office or from the English Department (118 PLC). Petitions to make any adjustments to the University Writing Requirement may be submitted to the Composition Committee on forms available in the English Department.
