UO Art History Association Minutes

Friday, January 16, 2003 2:00 pm | Hearth Café, Lawrence Hall

1. Quick review of projects and finances (Gayle & Elizabeth)

·        See December minutes (sent with January minutes)

·        Gayle put the books remaining from our fall book sale on Half.com and Amazon.com and contacted two rare Asian books sellers and sold en bloc. In summary, we made about $250 over break, (and they continue to sell).

2. Symposium (Liz)

·        There are two submissions so far from outside the department.

·        Remember the deadline for abstracts is January 31, 2004

·        Liz suggested Lawrence Fong, the new director at the UO Museum of Art. He is local (no travel expenses) and it will give him an opportunity to address the Oregon Art Historians.

·        Nissie spoke with Esther Jacobson. She offered $500-1000 mostly for the travel costs of the keynote speaker. To get this money we must prove that our symposium will be worth the expense and come up with a hook to get people to come to Eugene. She also recommended Al Acres from Princeton as a keynote speaker this year. He researches Renaissance Art and has written about the issue of time.

·        After much discussion, AHA decided to invite Fong to speak at the 2004 Symposium and begin planning for the 2005 symposium. Nissie volunteered to organize it. She requested that you send ideas for themes to her via email (nissiesue@hotmail.com).

3. Art Collecting (Dawn)

·        There has been two submissions. The committee hopes to meet to discuss project in the next month.

4. PAM Event -- Helen Frankenthaler, Dec 13 to Feb 15 (Adrianne)

·        The only relevant lecture or activity taking place was on a Thursday night. So we will go just for the exhibit.

·        A sign-up sheet was passed around to poll whether Saturday or Sunday was best. Many wanted to look at their schedule before signing, so the list will be circulated via the list serv.

5. Volunteers for upcoming PAM Events

·        Fabergé and His Menagerie, Feb 7 to May 9 (???)

·        Waking Dreams: The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites, Mar 19 - May 29 (Elizabeth Wages)

·        From Fra Angelico to Bonnard: Masterpieces from the Rau Collection, Jan 24 – Aug 22 (???)

6. Quick AIA report (Heather & Elizabeth)

·        Liz and Heather saw some very interesting lectures (and some that were not).

·        Heather met a potential advisor for one of her Ph.D. school choices and learned more about other programs that she had applied to.

·        They both advise that if you are volunteering at CAA and want to see a presentation in another area, you can request to work that presentation or at least in the area. AIA made every effort to accommodate their interests.

7. CAA & SAH (Clare/Dawn & Amanda)

·        Since P.O.s for lodging must be made before travel, and we cannot pay individuals, we will pay for two hotel rooms now and have the travelers pay into our account. This way we can divvy discount the rooms for the travelers by using our raised funds.

8. AAA Student Advisory Committee report, if any (Adrianne/Julia/Tina)

·        This is our vehicle to get the attention of the Dean and make ourselves visible in the AAA School. It is very important for our department to get more funding which will fund our interests – GTFs, travel funds, scholarships for grads and ugrads, etc, etc.

·        One important way we can be more visible is going to the meetings with the dean (like this Wednesday) and with his assistant (other Wednesdays). Adrianne, Julia and Tina have generously volunteered their lunches to represent us last term, but now because of scheduling conflicts, Julia and Tina can no longer attend. Although SAC meets every Wednesday, that is often too much of a commitment for one person so they rotate. Nissie has volunteered but we still need more people. Amanda has a schedule conflict but will represent us next term. If you could help, please contact Adrianne (hamiltonadrianne@hotmail.com).

·        Another way to make ourselves heard is to make suggestions or comments surveys about AAA and put them in the red boxes in several locations, including in the Magritte-inspired box in Art History office, before next Wednesday, Jan. 21 (by noon, I assume). [I like the idea of a Beaux Arts or a Black and White Ball for the whole school.]

·        Anyone interested in meeting with the Dean next Wednesday is welcome (12 noon in 141 LA)

9. (2) Grad Student/Faculty Liaisons

·        Dawn and Carla will be our liaisons for the remainder of the year (unless they have scheduling conflicts or just want out)

10. Valentine's Day Fundraising (Elizabeth)

·        Gretchen S. made beautiful beaded bracelets to sell. We agreed that $15 ($3 profit) was too low and that they could easily sell for more ($17-20). She also made cards with photographs to add to the inventory.

·        Gayle will solicit more book donations from campus faculty and staff

·        Elizabeth will email us about card making – tentatively set for next Friday, Jan. 23.

11. Next meeting: Friday, February 6 at 2:00 in the Hearth Café

·        For those of you with schedule conflicts this term, please communicate via our list serv – that is how most things happen anyway (arthistory@lists.uoregon.edu).
