MELAB

(Michigan English Language Assessment Battery)

The MELAB was developed to assess the English language proficiency of students who are applying to US and Canadian universities, colleges, or community colleges where the language of instruction is English. Many educational institutions in the US and Canada accept the MELAB as an alternative to the TOEFL, as evidence of English language proficiency. The MELAB is also used to assess the general English language proficiency of professionals who will need to use English in their work or in on-site training in the US. Other individuals who take the MELAB are non-native speakers interested in obtaining a general assessment of their English language proficiency that can help them to make decisions about applying for educational or employment opportunities.

TEST INFORMATION

The MELAB is designed to measure proficiency in the four basic language skill areas: writing, listening, reading, and speaking. The entire MELAB takes 2.5 hrs. – 3.5 hrs. and consists of:

  • Part 1: A written composition (30 min.)
  • Part 2: A listening comprehension test (approx. 25 min.)
  • Part 3: A grammar, cloze, vocabulary, and reading comprehension test ( 1hr. 15min)
  • Speaking Test (optional). The Speaking Test is not automatically included in every MELAB administration. The Speaking Test may not be taken separately. It may be taken only in conjunction with the written MELAB exam.
