Beyond a video game, Second Life is a world where many educators are meeting, networking, and creating virtual educational spaces. Higher ed institutions from around the world are collaborating with other college, university, library, and K-12 educators within this virtual world. Social networking, classes, conferences, virtual learning objects, and so much more can be found in SL. This workshop will introduce you to what Second Life is and how it might be used in your teaching.

This workshop will be a Second Life 101 for those interested in the possibility of incorporating some or all of their course into a 3D Virtual World, but are not sure how to do this.
This workshop will address SL basics—navigation, fly, search, chat, IM, touch, sit down, and use of the control panel. Following this exploration, we will visit a few education and content-related sites in Second Life. Handouts and access to a U of O Faculty in Second Life web portal will be made available.

"We are a community of University of Oregon faculty interested in exploring virtual worlds, like Second Life, as an additional medium of instruction.
Our goal is to learn as much as we can about this phenomena and to exploit those parts that may benefit of ourselves and our students.
Because we are all "newbies" in this strange new world, we must stick together and help each other out. We believe that the best set of tools for such a large collaboration is the Google Apps suite."
