Dan Kimble First Year Teaching Award

The Dan Kimble First Year Teaching Award (two $500 awards), jointly sponsored by the Graduate School and the Teaching Effectiveness Program (TEP), is designed to recognize outstanding teaching performances by graduate teaching fellows (GTFs) leading a discussion section or lab in the first year of teaching, or as the sole instructor for a course in the first year of teaching.

The award acknowledges a GTF’s investment in professional development. Recipients of this award must demonstrate their commitment to excellence in undergraduate education through participation in UO faculty development services, teacher trainings, and workshops and classes which are open and available to all instructors free of charge. Teacher trainings offered by the Teaching Effectiveness Program (TEP) satisfies this requirement for first time teachers. These trainings cover basic teaching skills and provide an opportunity to practice teaching and receive feedback. Other comparable UO teacher training sessions may qualify. If you did not attend a teacher training sponsored by TEP, please submit a description of the teacher training you attended, including the number of hours and curriculum for the training.

All UO GTFs who meet the criteria described above, and who are teaching during the current academic year are eligible to apply for this award. In addition to completing professional development activities, applicants must fill out an application form available through the Graduate School, complete a midterm student feedback survey and videotaping through TEP, and submit a copy of their departmental end-of-term evaluations plus copies of the narrative student comments for one course taught during the current academic year. Be sure you check with your department on this. If your department does not conduct end of term evaluations for your position, you will need to do this through TEP. Request an end-of-term email survey from TEP by week nine of the term in which you are teaching. The survey will go out on the Monday of week 10 and the results will be available that Friday.

Application materials must be received by TEP, 68 PLC, no later than June 30 of the current academic year.

Applications will be reviewed during the summer and awards will be given at the following Fall GTF Orientation. If you have questions about this award, please call Georgeanne Cooper, Director of the Teaching Effectiveness Program at 346-2177 or contact her via e-mail at gcooper@uoregon.edu.
