Faculty Showcase Podcasts

The instructors featured here are either award winners or are well-known for the quality of their teaching. All take their role in the classroom very seriously and their thoughtful comments offer insights into the philosophy and practice that informs good teaching. These conversations with noted instructors took place during the spring of 2007. They have been edited a bit for length. (see podcast instructions below).

Sarah LaChance Adams is a doctoral candidate in the philosophy department at the University of Oregon.  At UO she has taught in both the humanities and philosophy departments.  She received her MA in psychology from Seattle University in 2004.  She earned her BA from Mount Holyoke College in 1999, where she worked as a TA in the "Unity of Science" and as a writing tutor.  In 2005 she won the Dan Kimble First Year Teaching Award, and in 2007 she won the Paideia Prize for Excellence in Teaching.  Adams is currently writing a dissertation on motherhood in care ethics and phenomenological ethics. 

 

Duncan McDonaldDuncan McDonald, April 20, 2007 (MP3 Audio - 18min 43 sec, 3.2 MB)

Duncan McDonald retired in 2007 as a professor in the School of Journalism and Communication after 30 years service. During his tenure, he also served as Dean of the School and as UO Vice President of Public Affairs and Development. The winner of the Ersted Award for Distinguished teaching, McDonald is author or co-author of six books and multiple editions, including When Words Collide and Mastering the Message.

Josh RoeringJosh Roering was raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, on a steady diet of casserole and Prairie Home Companion. In 1994, Josh graduated from Stanford University with a B.S. in Geological and Environmental Sciences. During summers, he taught tennis and worked in Yosemite National Park as a backcountry ranger. He remained at Stanford and in 1995 completed a M.S. thesis on the mechanics of thrust fault propagation. After jumping across the bay to UC Berkeley, Josh completed his PhD in geomorphology in 2000. He and wife Michele moved to New Zealand for a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Canterbury and after a year of embracing mountains, wool, and many lamb chops, they moved to Eugene, Oregon, where Josh began working as a professor in the Department of Geological Sciences. Their two children Oscar and Stella love swimming, kitty cats, and music by Madonna.
