Archtiectonics Studio Guide

Structures I Guide

This is the first of a five part course about structures for students of architecture. It not only covers the history, theory and design of structural systems, but the way in which load-bearing structure has been, and can be, used in making space. Structures I contains the materials necessary to begin to build a vocabulary with which one can create beautiful structures. This course carves the basic building blocks. There are three important componants to this courseware: the lectures, the example problems and the labs. Each part has proven critical to the successful exploration of the issues at hand.

In order to maximize your benefit from the materials, you should make every attempt to explore all of the multi-media aspects of the lectures. Animations and movies are inclulded when they are the best media to illustrate the principle. Line drawing are used where they seem appropriate. This courseware is not about bells and whistles, rather about enabling learning with the most effective means possible.

The lectures for this course are based on a the class notes that were developed over many years by John Briscoe and Donald Peting at the University of Oregon. They were completly reworked, expanded upon and digitized by Dr. Chris Luebkeman. Many others have also worked to make this vision become a reality.
