Lab 7: Campus Walk

The Problem
The problem is to take a walk with the lab section across the campus, stopping at distinct points along the way to discuss the structural systems that are present.

The Objectives
The objectives of this exercise are to reinforce the notions:

that structures are an everyday part of our built environment.
that structural understanding can only increase a design repertoire.
that structural concepts can be simply visualized and understood.
that sketching is a critical skill of every designer

The Rules
The only material that can be used for this exercise is postcard sized (4" x 6") white or off-white card stock. The sketches should be clear with the free-body diagram indicated on the same side as the sketched image. A written verbal description of the structural system, and/or any unique characteristics that are observed should be included on the reverse side of the card.

The Documentation
Ten postcards should be completed by the end of the walk and turned in immediately.

The Evaluation
The evaluation will be based upon the clarity and degree of completion of the postcards. It will also depend upon the accruacy of the free-body diagrams and the lucid description of each of the structural systems.
