Student Originated Studies (SOS)
Previous Projects: 1999-2000
In the third year of the Student Originated Studies (SOS) grant program, the
following 9 projects were funded. These projects include a wide range of community
development and natural resource studies.:
- Virginia Hodgdon studied the role riparian areas play in reducing stream
sedimentation in the North Yamhill subbasin of the Willamette Valley. The
project combines assessment at the landscape level and more detailed research
along three streams with varying degrees of riparian cover.
- Fred Jarman studied jurisdictions along the Willamette River to determine
if progress has been made since 1992 towards improving policies responsible
for the planning and implementation of the Willamette River Greenway Program.
- Mark Stevens developed and implemented a public involvement program to assist
Sweet Home in updating their comprehensive plan.
- Pete Walter assisted the Crooked River Watershed Council in evaluating an
alternative methodology of riparian and channel condition assessment.
- Rob Williams examined how stakeholders in the McKenzie River watershed establish
knowledge of ecosystem management practices, where they get their information,
and whom they trust to make management decisions.
- Sally Wright developed a handbook to assist in identifying and creating
low-income housing in historic buildings.
- Lori Olson performed statistical analyses, examined trends, identified problem
areas, and developed an action plan that offered mitigation alternatives toward
improving water quality in Bear Creek in southern Oregon.
- Scott Bogle identified policy considerations and strategies to be used by
planners and developers when historic preservation goals and growth management
goals conflict in reviewing urban redevelopment projects.
- Matthew McCarthy applied the Land Evaluation and Site Analysis (LESA) system,
which rates parcels and assigns scores according to criteria, to evaluate
cities in Marion County, and to develop an evaluation system for future use.
