Student Originated Studies (SOS)
Previous Projects: 1998-1999
In the second year of the Student Originated Studies (SOS) grant program, the
following 14 projects were funded. These projects include a wide range of community
development and natural resource studies.:
- Laura Anderson investigated the possible policy mechanisms and business
strategies that could be employed to generate local sources of revenue for
watershed stewardship in Newport.
- Paul Belson examined groundwater protection strategies for the City of Veneta.
- Jeannie Brush developed strategies that a community could employ to maintain
the character of its historic districts while sustaining its growth management
objectives.
- Sean Edwards assessed the job creation potential of ecosystem management
in the upper Rogue watershed.
- Travis Fox developed improvement strategies for the Eastern Oregon Regional
Airport.
- Sheryl Hogan examined values and practices associated with Lane County System
of Care, a family-oriented strengths-based social service delivery system.
- Will Kay provided assistance in writing ordinances to protect existing agricultural
lands in Crook County.
- André LeDuc examined the feasibility of developing an institute and information
clearinghouse regarding Oregon’s natural hazards and environmental resources.
- Karen McElroy examined the impact of microenterprise programs on individuals
and communities.
- John Pearch attempted to identify how clay minerals contribute to persistent
turbidity in water treatment facilities of the South Santiam Municipal Watershed.
- Josh Peters conducted a watershed assessment and initiated a stakeholder
involvement process in the Sutherlin Creek watershed.
- Scott Robson developed a community land trust handbook that explained why
and how to start a nonprofit land trust.
- Angela Wright explored local knowledge and values regarding stream and riparian
management, ecological functions and current conditions in a portion of the
South Santiam watershed.
