Student Originated Studies (SOS)

Overview

The University of Oregon Community Service Center (CSC) has limited funding available through its Student Originated Studies (SOS) Program for projects assisting communities in Oregon. SOS grants are available to graduate students at the University of Oregon. Funding will be provided to projects that clearly address community planning, community development, economic development, natural resource planning or social service needs.

SOS grants provide a connection between the educational experience of students and the needs of Oregon communities. Proposed SOS projects should be designed to address specific, community-based needs while strengthening the link between higher education and Oregon communities and agencies. Through these projects, students at the University of Oregon will develop partnerships with organizations such as towns, cities, counties, watershed councils, non-profit organizations, schools and state and federal agencies. These partnerships will provide technical assistance to Oregon and promote experiential education opportunities for students and faculty. Proposals should support and further the SOS mission, to create new partnerships by using Learn and Serve America(1) funds and educational awards, in combination with other state and federal funds, to link local governments, state agencies and state universities through student projects.

All applications must clearly demonstrate community need and support for the proposal. A cash match of 25% of project costs is required from the community partner. Projects must provide a direct service or product for the community partner.

Students are invited to submit proposals for funding of up to $1,000 per project for direct expenses. Students may also receive an AmeriCorps education award for completing at least 450 hours of service. All applications must be received by February 8, 2002. Applicants will be notified of the status of their proposal within three weeks of the deadline. Project work must be completed by September 30, 2002.

For an application packet, please contact us by telephone (541/346-2879) or by e-mail (sos@darkwing.uoregon.edu).
