Burnside Bridgehead Redevelopment

Neighborhood Plan Bridgehead Project
Neighborhood Plan Bridgehead Project
This project involved the re-zoning and planning of an entire district within Portland's "Industrial Sanctuary" at the east end of the Burnside Bridge.  The new master plan includes splitting Burnside into two one way streets forming a couplet with Couch St. to the north.  Mixed use zoning is specified for these streets with residential towers along the freeway to the north and residential loft conversions to the south.  Industrial zoning is retained within the district in the hope of providing work places within walking distance of these residences.  There are new street trees along Burnside and its existing colonnade is repaired and extended from Grand St. to 12th Ave.  Existing Victorian homes are saved and moved to enfront a two block long park in the heart of the residential area.  An elementary charter school is included to the east of this park, near an existing high school, and an adult vocational school stretches along the bridge itself.  The trade school shares an elevated sidewalk with the bridge and provides visual interest as well as rain/sun covering to that part of the causeway.  A public square intended for a market showcasing products from the district and trade school is included as a "bridgehead" project to spark street life within the area.  The final version includes two residential towers at each end of the trade school that will be market rate and provide funding for the trade school and partially subsidize the artist residences above the school.
