Research
You made your bed, now lie in it.
Smile and the world smiles with you.
Don't sh** where you eat.
These and other bits of folk wisdom illustrate some of the many kinds of person-environment interactions. People are affected by their social environments, but not passively: individuals play an active role in selecting, changing, interpreting, and responding to their environments. Person-environment interactions are a recurring theme in my research: I am interested in understanding how phenomena that may seem to be bounded within a person (like emotions or personality traits) dynamically interact with real-world social contexts. In particular, I have focused on interpersonal and self-perception processes, emotions in social contexts, and personality dynamics and development. Here are links to a fuller description of the research we do in my lab and to selected publications.
