I am an Emeritus Professor in the
Mathematics
Department at the University
of Oregon.

I am retired from teaching at the University of Oregon. My last class at
the U of O, in the spring of 2000, was a Freshman Seminar Statistics
and Mathematics of Baseball. You may find the bibliography, which I
updated after the course, useful. Jim Albert has taught an introductory
statistics class entirely from a baseball perspective. The book Teaching
Statistics Using Baseball (published by the Mathematical Association of
America) contains a number of essays on various topics in probability and
statistics with associated exercises. For more information, see
Albert's
website.

Over the years, several graduate students have found some notes of mine,
Informal
Introduction to Set Theory, useful. For an improved version of the
appendix on Tychonoff's Theorem, click here: Set
Theory Appendix.
-
I am active in the
Mathematical Association
of America and in the Pacific
Northwest Section of the MAA. I am a member of the following MAA committees:
Advisory Board for the (Halmos) Conference Center, Chauvenet Prize Committee,
Committee on the Silver and Gold Banquet, ad hoc Planning Committee for
the MAA Centennial (2015), and the Spectrum Editorial Board. I am also
an Associate Editor for Mathematics Magazine.
-
Research interests: harmonic analysis and probability.
-
Ruth and I have several kids, namely Emily, Jeanie, John, Laurel and Lisa.
Matthew (born February 9, 1996) and Mark (born February 12, 1999) are our
grandchildren.
