Course Description: Musical experiences and responses in contemporary society; standards for music quality. Elementary and secondary school music programs, past and present, and their relationships to the communities they serve.
Goal: To stimulate thinking concerning music education history and philosophy that will reflect self knowledge, as well as integrity and consistency within one's personal and professional life.
Objectives: 1. To learn a chronology of music education history and develop your own outline of important events in American music and music education.
2. To look at the theory/practice duality in the terminology used in professional music education circles, with particular attention given to national and state reforms, including CIM/CAM, PASS and national MENC Standards
3. To learn to use a consistent theoretical framework to evaluate and analyze the problems of teaching/learning music.

Grading: 20% Show the attitudes and values of a professional teacher: prompt and regular attendance, excellent preparation, and enthusiastic participation in class activities.
20% Mid-term exam over terminology and concepts. Take home essay paper.
20% In class presentations. You will teach a session concerning a philosophical point.
10% In class quiz on assessment strategies.
30% Final project presented at Final exam time. An expository paper (c. 15 pages) relating a specific teaching problem and relate it to state and national standards (CIM/CAM and PASS). A reference list of approximately 10 citations will be included to show your investigation of resources. Use APA or Standard MLA format with footnotes or endnotes. Outline of term paper due on week six.
