Funding Opportunities for Political Science Graduate Students

There are a wide range of funding opportunities for Political Science Graduate Students, within the department, at the University, and from an even larger range of agencies and foundations.  What follows is an effort to identify all of the opportunities within the department and SOME of the opportunities in the University and wider community.  This is, by no means, a comprehensive list.  The department encourages all grad students to seek funding opportunities from whatever sources they may be available, including going over to the Graduate School and looking through their online database of funding opportunities.  You should also feel free to talk with the Graduate Advisor at any time to discuss ways to finance your graduate studies.

Deadlines: Please note that the deadlines for University and external grants change from year to year and sometimes even during a year.  You should use the deadlines here only as guidelines.  To be sure you get your application in on time, check out the relevant website for the current deadlines and related information.

University of Oregon Doctoral Research Fellowship

The Program:

The Graduate School and the Office of the Vice President for Research are pleased to announce the call for nominations for the Year 2007 UO Doctoral Research Fellowships.  These fellowships are designed to support outstanding doctoral students and promote excellence in research at the University of Oregon .  Fellowships are available to eligible doctoral students in all academic disciplines at the University.  The fellowship program provides financial support for exceptional doctoral candidates as they complete their research and the writing of their dissertations.

Fellowship Stipend:

Each fellowship carries a cash stipend of $18,000 and each fellow will receive a University tuition waiver.  Fellowships are tenable for up to 12 months.

Eligibility and Application Process:

To be eligible, doctoral students must be advanced to candidacy at the time of application.  Each department may nominate one candidate for the fellowship and the following additional materials should support each nomination:

1.     Letter of nomination signed by the department head

2.     Three letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the candidate's research, academic background, and potential as a developing scholar

3.     A research prospectus of the dissertation (not more than 20 double-spaced pages), written for faculty who are not necessarily specialists in the subject area

4.     A resume identifying academic awards, honors, and scholarly activity

5.     A copy of the candidate's academic transcripts

Where To Apply:

Letters of nomination and supporting materials should be sent to Marian Friestad, Associate Dean, Graduate School, 125 Chapman Hall (telephone 346-5129).

Deadlines for Application and Schedule of Awards:

Letters of nomination and all supporting materials must be submitted to the Graduate School by February 13, 2007.  Applications will be evaluated in consultation with a subcommittee of the Graduate Council.  Fellowship awards will be made by mid-March.

Other Conditions:

Fellows must be full-time students at the University of Oregon during the period of the fellowship.  If fellows will be conducting research off-campus during the period of the award, a justification should be provided in the letter of nomination and a letter of support must be obtained from the host institution, laboratory, library, or researcher.  The University of Oregon Doctoral Research Fellowship may not be held concurrently with other forms of public or institutional support.

Oregon University System - SYLFF Graduate Fellowships for International Research

Fellowship Program for Academic Year 2005-06

PURPOSE

Graduate Fellowships for International Research are supported by an endowment to the Oregon University System (OUS) that established the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF). As of 2004, similar endowments have been established in 69 institutions or consortia in 45 countries by the Nippon Foundation, and administered through the Tokyo Foundation. The goal of the SYLFF Program is to nurture future leaders who will transcend geopolitical, religious, ethnic, and cultural boundaries in the world community for the peace and the well-being of humankind. General information about SYLFF programs is available at:  http://www.tkfd.or.jp/eng/division/fellowship/sylff/index.shtml .

STIPEND

The stipend for OUS-SYLFF fellows is up to $12,000 for the academic year to assist with educational and research expenses. Approximately five fellowships are awarded at the maximum level each year, with several partial fellowship stipends typically given each year to help subsidize research-related expenses and travel.

ELIGIBILITY AND NOMINATIONS

Fellowship stipends are awarded for one year of full-time graduate work involving research and scholarly endeavors in programs and projects with an international dimension. The focus is on master’s and doctoral degree-seeking students within OUS who have high potential for leadership in international affairs, in public life or private endeavor. Outstanding students in the social/behavioral sciences, arts and humanities, and directly-related professional fields (e.g., public policy, business, law, and communications) will be considered through nomination by their respective graduate department/program. Nominations made by a specific department/program are limited to a maximum of two. If two are made, they must be prioritized. Nominations also must include indication of any supplemental funding anticipated from the department-program-institution such as the award of an assistantship, scholarship, tuition waiver, and/or other comparable award. Typically, these supplemental contributions are in the form of an assistantship and associated tuition waiver such that SYLFF stipends can be used to address travel, living, and research expenses associated with the international research project. Although nominations may be made for students lacking supplemental funding, a priority will be given to those nominations that exhibit a strong institutional commitment to the support of the graduate student

APPLICATION

Departments/graduate programs are responsible for recommending student applicants. The Recommendation File shall include a nominating letter from the department chair or graduate program director, three letters of reference addressing the student's qualifications and potential related to this fellowship, the application form prepared by the student, official undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and GRE scores if required by the department/program. TOEFL scores must be included for international students whose native language is not English.
