Professor Julia Nemirovskaya (EMAIL; tel. -4065) describes the course:

This course is open to all students.  We will read and discuss ( in English) works that have had a tremendous impact on the way russians view themselves, their history and culture.  These texts provide us with the highest number of cultural patterns and stereotypes.  The list will include Goncharov's "Oblomov," Leskov's "Lefty," Dostoevsky's "Devils," Bulgakov's "Master and Margarita," V. Erofeev's "Moscow to the End of the Line" and several other "cult" texts. Besides appreciating these masterpieces as literary works we will focus on their role in forming the ideology of Russian civilization in general.  Students are expected to participate in class discussions and write two five-page essays.
