About REESC
The Russian and East European Studies Center is the home
of undergraduate and graduate programs in all
fields connected to Russia, Eastern Europe, and former
Soviet Eurasia at the University of Oregon.
Together with its sister programs in the Oregon
Consortium of International and Area Studies Programs
(OCIAS), the Center
is located in Prince Lucien Campbell Hall (PLC) on the
University of Oregon campus.
REESC is one of the oldest centers devoted to the study
of Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia in the United
States. Established in 1968, it was a founding institutional
member of the American Association
for the Advancement of Slavic Studies. In its first three
decades, the Center brought together scholars with a
shared interest in the region for
occasional lectures, collaborative projects, and social
events, and it allowed students in other departments
to earn a certificate of mastery
in the Russian and East European area. The Center today
reflects this long history of interdisciplinary scholarly
interaction, but the 1998 merger
of REESC with the Russian Department has transformed
a loose collegial grouping into a comprehensive degree-granting
program at the bachelor's
and master's levels.
REESC students may presently take courses in Russian
language, literature, film, history, culture, and politics,
and in East European and Eurasian geography, anthropology,
art history, musicology, linguistics, history, religion,
and sociology. Many of these fields offer enough specialized
courses on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia to allow
students to develop a formal concentration within the
larger interdisciplinary major, minor, or master's program.
Our roster of 13 participating faculty members and 13
associated, emeritus, and courtesy faculty comprises
innovative and committed teachers, with distinguished
and in many cases internationally-recognized records
of scholarly publication.
REESC also hosts a variety of programs for the general
public, including lectures and cultural events, such
as plays and musical performances.
