2000 Football Game Waste Management Pilot Project

In Fall 2000, Campus Recycling, along with the City of Eugene, worked with Athletics to perform a pilot waste management project at 2 home football games. A waste assessment was performed (see attached), a pilot plan was determined, executed and then evaluated. Here are the results:

October 21st, UO vs. Arizona
The Game: The first effort at football recycling was to collect bottles and cans from inside the stadium. 24 green plastic bottle/can recycling bins were set-up around the perimeter of the stadium to encourage fans to recycle. It is important to provide familiarity with recycling systems in order for the public to take on the new practice. The Clean Up: After the football games the stands were littered with waste. The football program hires a crew to clean the bowl of the stadium (seating area) on Sunday morning after every home game. The first task is to sweep all the material under the benches to the aisle. At this point all the material, recyclables and trash, formed a mound down the aisle. A crew of 4-6 walked up and down each aisle picking out recyclables.

Materials collected:

Approximate amounts collected:

TOTAL RECYCLABLES=1.23 tons/28% of stadium waste stream

BREAKDOWN OF MATERIALS COLLECTED:
70 bags of recyclables (28% of waste stream)
180 bags of garbage (72% of waste stream)

November 11th, UO vs. California
As written in the first project, recyclables were sorted from the aisles, but this time newspaper and compostables were also included. The newspaper was taken to be processed by Campus Recycling and the compostables were taken to a mulching company.

Materials Collected:
Approximate Amounts Collected: TOTAL RECYCLABLES FROM STADIUM=1.4 tons/48% of stadium waste stream

BREAKDOWN OF MATERIALS COLLECTED:

102 bags of recyclables (48% of waste stream)
110 bags of garbage (52% of waste stream)

**ADDITIONALLY, 1.2 tons of Visqueen was recycled from the Moshofshky Center. This was done through a pro-active effort by Campus Recycling. This is the FIRST time this material hasn't been sent to the landfill.
