Class meets:
475 McKenzie Hall, 1:00-3:50 Wednesdays
Course Requirements:
History 407 is a "capstone"
course designed for senior history majors. The major requirement for the
course is to write a historical research
paper of 20-25 pages, based on primary sources. Your goal is to
choose a topic and write a paper that:
- Asks a
good historical question
- Is based on
primary sources
- Tells how its interpretation connects
to previous work by other
historians, and
- Offers a well-organized
and persuasive thesis of its own.
Students will also complete and hand
in weekly assignments that are designed
to contribute directly to the final paper.
Grades
As in most research seminar courses, the bulk
of your grade for this course will depend on the quality of your
final research paper. Keep in mind, though, that since each of the
smaller assignments will help you write your final paper--and because
all the students in the class will benefit from your participation--I
will lower the grades of students who do not attend class regularly, complete
the assigned readings, participate in class discussions, complete each
assignment in time for the due date. The due dates for weekly
assignments are clearly marked on the course syllabus, and I'll expect
to see all your final papers in their most polished form on Wednesday,
December 10, 2008.
Fair warning: I am
very reluctant to accept late papers and to gives grades of "incomplete."
Since I will do so only in highly unusual situations, such as documented
health emergencies, you should start planning NOW to meet all the course
deadlines.
