T. W. Palmer Books
Specialty: Western Americana related to the discovery, exploration and
natural history survey of the American West from Alaska to Cape san Lucas
on Baja
California and east to the Front Range. Before the West could be explored,
America had to be discovered, so I have many books relating to that
and some relating to exploration of the rest of the world.
My interest in the history of cartography also extends to the whole
world. I maintain a particular interest in western American Railroads.
I am interested in any original, early or scholarly edition of maps or books
relating to the exploration of the American West from the time of Sir
Francis Drake until the end of the nineteenth century. More recent books
on
geology, botany, etc. of the west which extend and correct earlier findings
are also of interest. Finally, I stock some examples of fine printing,
particularly by the Grabhorn Press and Nash.
I am definitely interested in buying whole collections or individual items
within the areas outlined above.
Present stock: About 4,500 volumes and 1,000 maps from the 16th through the
20th century.
Sales by E-mail or ordinary mailorder.
At present I am not often able to allow personal visits,
and then only by prior arrangement.
History and status: I have been a book collector in a fairly serious way
since I was an undergraduate. Long ago I decided that I would eventually
engage
in bookselling and began accumulating multiple copies of some books
with that in mind. I formally began this business in 1985 when my oldest
son was preparing to go to college. The next year I became a dean and that
used up most of my time and also provided the extra income I wanted.
As a result, I have yet to pursue this business very actively.
I am still buying much more than I sell. Within a few years
I expect to retire as a Professor of Mathematics and make this business
one focus of my activities. At that time I hope to begin listing my stock
on this web page.
