Trails that circumnavigate lakes possess an irresistible charm; it seems almost instinctual to adventure entirely around a wilderness lake. The Waldo Lake Trail could be the ultimate of all trails that circle lakes. Waldo Lake is one of the purest, most spectacular lakes on the planet, and the trail provides ample opportunity to explore it. You'll finish the ride tired, but with a spirit that reflects the clear, quiet beauty of this natural gem.
Continued mountain bike access to this trail depends on the sensitivity of every Waldo Lake rider. Most of the trail lies in the very narrow corridor between the lake shore and the Waldo Wilderness area. Do not ride on any of the trails that lead away from the lake. This is a pristine, high elevation ecosystem that won't tolerate abuse. Neither will other Waldo visitors who feel strongly about maintaining the area's natural integrity. Please do not ride this trail when wet, and carry the bike over sections that will sustain impact. Approach other users in a friendly and safe manner. It would be tragic to see "Closed!" stamped across this ride in the book's next edition.
Completing the entire loop is a serious, challenging undertaking--do not underestimate the difficulty of this ride! 18 trail miles of continuous up and down, with lengthy technical stretches makes a very long day. Perhaps the most common mistake regarding this ride is the chronic, "late start syndrome". Riding one of the other trails in the area, camping out, and beginning the Waldo Trail in the early morning is the best approach. Also, most of the ride is completely inaccessible. Make sure every rider has an adequate light and essentials for staying a night out. Iodine or tablets to purify water are good idea, as are a full array of spare parts and tools.
Perhaps the best route around the lake begins at the North Shore Campground in a counter-clockwise direction. That way the more technical northern section of the trail comes first when you're fresh, rather than when you're bushed. To get to the Campground, follow the directions for the Taylor Burn Road. Trail directions couldn't be simpler: keep the lake to your left and pedal back to where you started.
