Trails that follow rivers always seem to offer a beautiful and refreshing ride. The North Umpqua trail is a perfect example. This ride is just south of Lane County but it is too good a ride to exclude simply because it falls on the wrong side of a line.
Take I-5 south to Roseburg. Follow the signs east toward the North Umpqua River, Highway 138. Follow Highway 138 approximately 36 miles upstream to Wright Creek. Wright Creek is one end of the the trail. Choose to either start here or drive another 9.5 miles upstream to Apple Creek. At Apple Creek, cross the bridge to the south side of the river where there is room for half a dozen cars to park. If you are going to ride this trail in both directions, it is recommended that you start at Wright Creek and ride east.
The trail is well marked at all trailheads and intersections. It is rocky and quite challenging in sections. Except when the snow line is extremely low, this trail can be ridden year round. Within the first 5 miles, traveling from east to west, are some short but quite steep climbs which often cannot be ridden by even an advanced rider. Although this section from Apple Creek to Steamboat can be avoided, some of the most spectacular views lie along this section. Steamboat trailhead can be accessed by crossing the river at the bridge approximately 50 yards past the Steamboat Creek Road.
The trail section from Steamboat to Wright Creek,5.5 miles, is much flatter and stays closer to the river. In fact, the trail is so close to the river in some areas that the trail builders built elevated concrete walks to keep ones feet and knobbies dry.
The Umpqua National Forest is adding additional miles to the trail. Discover and enjoy these new sections next time you are in the area.
