Magical forests, bubbling wild river, lava beds, and unique surprises, await the mountain biker on the McKenzie River Trail. The trail weaves, bobs and curves through the trees along the bank of the majestic river; a sheer joy to ride. The trail's beauty and easy access also make it a very popular trail with hikers. In fact, this trail is the most politically sensitive ride in the book in terms of potential user conflict. The Eugene Mountain Bike Resource Group has worked with land managers to assure continued mountain bike access on the McKenzie River Trail. Ride responsibly so that mountain bikers can continue to enjoy this experience! Future complaints of reckless riding could close this trail. This is not a ride to test your control at high speed; instead, approach it as scenic peaceful glide through the trees.

The McKenzie River National Recreation Trail Map, is the best resource for showing the trail's many access points, highlights, and distances. The lower trailhead is located 1.5 miles past McKenzie Bridge on Highway 126; the upper is 26.5 miles upriver off the Old Santiam Wagon Road. Riding up the trail makes a good choice: it's a gentle climb, gets your heart going, offers a better view of the scenery, and reduces the chance for other users being surprised by a fast bike. Ride downhill on Highway 126 for a fast trip back to the car.

Whatever route you decide to take, try to include Tamolitch Pool where the McKenzie reemerges from its underground lava bed detour into a crystal clear blue pool. The 100 foot Sahalie Falls and her 70 foot sister, Koosah, are also well worth the peddle!
