This is one of the best single-track rides close to the Eugene/Springfield area. It's smooth needle surface and mostly gentle grade make this a perfect trail for beginners seeking a challenge or more advanced riders seeking a great workout through beautiful forest. The trail stays near the creek, offering beauty and good swimming opportunities.
From Eugene, Take I-5 south to the Oakridge-Hwy. 58 exit. Take 58 along Lookout point reservoir. 2 miles after entering the Willamette National. Forest (signed), look for the hiker sign and the fire danger sign where the road crosses an arm of the reservoir. You can't miss the large parking area that serves not only Goodman Cr. Trail, but Hardesty Mtn. and South Willamatte Trail also.
The climb up the trail is pleasant with only short sections of steepness and some great downhill runs as well. You do have the option of riding up Goodman Road #5833 which is .1 miles west of the parking area. If you ride the trail up, there will be a fork in the trail after the first short climb. Turn right for the Goodman Creek, straight for the South Willamette Trail. There are a few switchbacks that are perfect for learning how to negotiate these sharp turns. At 1.8 miles, just after a clearing, is a great summer swimming hole. The trail meets the Goodman road at a bit over 4 miles. If your still energetic and the trail surface is dry, cross the road and continue on the Eagles Rest Trail. The ride back down is fantastic!
