Alpine Trail highlighted in the Tire Mountain description.
Take Highway 58 to Road 19 north of Westfir. At 4.5 miles on Road 19, turn left on Road 1912. Follow Road 1912 for 6.5 miles until you come to Road 1910. Follow Road 1910 for 0.5 miles until the road divides; stay right on Road 1911. The Alpine trailhead is about 0.5 miles on the left.
Mount-up and follow Road 1912 for 5.7 miles to Road 1825. A short 0.4 miles on Road 1825 brings you to spur Road 228, where you turn left and climb 0.5 miles up to the signed north end of Alpine Trail. At just under 1.5 miles, you come upon the Elk Camp Shelter where you can enjoy the rustic structure and the open air outhouse. Rarely can one enjoy such beautiful scenery sitting on a toilet seat! From the shelter the trail rolls along and gradually climbs up to Sourgrass Mountain. The beargrass meadows are quite stunning, especially during wild flower season; a dramatic contrast to the dark forest. The next 2 miles to the car is mostly downhill. Enjoy the scenery, and respect the trail and users who may be walking up the trail.
There are a couple of additional access points to Alpine Trail worth noting that allow for longer or different loops. At 5.3 miles from Road 19, Road 683 diverges to access the trail about 2 miles south of the east terminus of the Tire Mountain Trail. Further up Road 1910, 2.5 miles past the Road 683 intersection, make a left turn on Road 1911 to access the Alpine Trail about 1 mile north of the Tire Mountain Trail terminus. The choice is yours. It's all great riding.
