Professor
Ph.D., Duke University
My
research interests center on the biology of pelagic marine phytoplankton.
In recent years, I have focused on the distributions and abundances
of the the eukaryotic ultraplankton, on incorporation of these
minute cells into the microbial food web, and on the role of
associated bacteria on the nutrition of phytoplankton. I am
also interested in harmful algal blooms, and in the sustainable
harvesting of marine macroalgae.
I have served on the Executive Board of the National Association
of Marine Laboratories, as president of the Western Association
of Marine Laboratories and on the Editorial Board of the Journal
of Phycology. I served as a Commissioner of the South Slough
National Estuarine Research Reserve, on the Ocean Studies Board
of the National Research Council, and on several NRC Committees,
including committees to evaluate the major ocean programs, assess
the Atlantic bluefin tuna, Arctic Ocean research and supporting
facilities, and improving methods for fish stock assessment.
Currently, I am Chair and of the Continental Shelf Advisory
Committee to Mineral and Management Services of the Department
of the Interior, and Treasurer of the American Society of Limnology
and Oceanography.
