On Point

Sometimes those that preach the loudest against oppression are its greatest proponents. It's been a pleasure to watch your slate of pseudo-morals and good-guy badges crumble, allowing a phoenix of true ideas and skills to emerge from the ashes of a poor man's political savvy.

--From the resignation letter of former Senator and radio news scion Eric Pfeiffer, as read aloud by Mitra Anoushiravani at the Jan. 19 Senate meeting.

I guess you're so used to being able to push people around that when someone tries to work WITH you, either your own egos or ignorance take precedence over any logic or humanity that may be lurking in your hollow souls.

--Pfeiffer, addressing his former Senate colleagues, continued. See below.

On Counterpoint

Was that supposed to be an insult?

--Student Senate President Jessica Timpany, upon the conclusion of Pfeiffer's letter. Isn't student government a wonderful place?.

On Worthwhile Opinions

I think this is the best Movies every made by Williams. He is truly amazing If you haven't seen this movie do not miss it!!!

--Former Emerald Photo Editor Scott Barnett, verbatim, sounding off as incoherently as possible on his gladstone site about "Dead Poet's Society," his pick for the best film of all time.

["Mr. Holland's Opus"] almost inspires me to be a musician. I am a little ashamed to admit this, being a male and all, but a little tear welled up in my eye at the end of the movie.

--Barnett, sinking further. What you ought to be ashamed of is a godawful website and no sense of taste.

On Racist Institutions

It's like Germany in the 1930s. People are disappearing all around us and no one asks why.

--Associate Law Professor Robin Morris Collins, on the of state of race relations at the University of Oregon, circa this week. The difference, Ms. Collins, is that the loss of what the Emerald euphemistically calls "diverse faculty" is due to the fact that they are finding better jobs in other places - not because they have been incarcerated and forced into slave labor. Nice try.

On Setting Realistic Goals

Your editorial confirmed some of my suspicions about their clandestine journalism [sic] tactics. Perhaps it's time for a full expos on the travesty that is the Emerald.

Concerned citizen and UO freshman Anna Kadar, in the Insurgent's Letters to the Collective, January 2000. Yes, Anna, the Ol' Dirty Emerald is a travesty, but no more so than the publication you've turned to. At least the Emerald can boast of a spell-checker.

If the Insurgent or a student group we're [sic] interested in getting behind a campaign to de-fund the the Emerald, I can offer the fact that already some of my fellow students in the dorms are whispering such suggestions to one another already.

--Kadar, planting the seeds of an uprising. The dorm rats are planning to overthrow the Emerald? To arms!

On Speed

He was my partner in crime.

-Charlotte Hornets guard David Wesley, eulogizing teammate Bobby Phills. Let's face it, Wesley. If speeding and reckless driving were real crimes, they wouldn't be infractions, now would they?

On Urine

Phoo-hoo, Super Bowl! Gettin' into the spirit now! All it took was a puddle of urine!

Local folk artist Bryan "Free" Wilson, known to frequent the bathrooms at the Carl's Jr. on 13th in search of inspiration. Try it out for yourself! It works!
