In the past we've welded these things together, tied them together with recycled inner-tubes, or used 6 u-bolts that you can get at the hardware store for about $1 each.
Welding them is strongest, and I've seen someone carry a 400lb engine block in one...but having them come apart for transport or storage is kind of nice too.
