We really appreciate the quality applicants that our faculty provide, and the advice that they offer their students to participate in IHS summer seminars. So it was a request we couldn't say no to. We've decided to extend the deadline an extra week (to April 9th), and I wanted to make sure you knew so that your students could take advantage of the extra time. I also wanted to pass along information about the great lectures we've lined up for the Liberty & Society seminar series. The seminars go beyond the basics to explore more sophisticated arguments for liberty. I think these seminars are particularly valuable because they allow participants an opportunity to take what they've learned in their studies and apply it to current issues, as well as encounter perspectives outside their discipline. Here is a sample of the variety of topics that will be covered: *Egalitarianism vs. Individualism -- Discuss the debate between Rawls and Nozick. *American Revolution and the Civil War -- Examine the importance of classical liberal ideas in understanding the history not only of the American Founding but of the Civil War as well. *Public Choice and Education -- Address the school choice debate from a public choice economics perspective. Which interest groups benefit from keeping schools the way they are? *Economic Freedom of the World Index -- Hear an economist speak about his work on the 2007 Economic Freedom of the World Index. Are there correlations between freedom and international development? We're also hosting 11 other conferences this summer on globalization, social change, the free press, and more. Visit www.TheIHS.org/seminar for more information, including dates, locations, and a full list of topics. Participation is free. IHS covers the cost of housing, meals, and books for the seminar.
