If you are able and willing to forward the following message about Teach For America to your students, we would greatly appreciate it. If you support our mission and vision and wouldn't mind passing out flyers to your students or allowing a Teach For America participant to speak to your students about his or her experiences, please let us know. We sincerely appreciate whatever you can do to help us inform students at the University of Oregon about Teach For America. Thank you! Megan Matheny Teach For America Western Campaign Director • The most recent International Mathematical and Science Study concluded that American seniors were among the poorest performers in both science and math, ranking 19th out 21 participating countries in the 12th grade assessment. • Children from "high income" families are 7 times more likely to graduate from college than kids from "low income" families. (Education Watch, 1998) • A recent survey by the Education Trust showed that over 1/3 of adults polled and almost 1/4 of teachers polled WOULD NOT have the same expectations for children from low-income areas as for children from affluent areas. Teach For America is the national teacher corps of outstanding recent college graduates from all academic majors and cultural backgrounds who commit two years to teach in the nation's most under-resourced urban and rural public schools. Current participants teach students in areas across the country from South-Central Los Angeles to the Mississippi Delta to the South Bronx and continue their pursuit for educational excellence and equity after their two year commitment in a variety of career fields — including research, medicine, education, and corporate life. Math, science, and engineering majors who want to stay connected to the greater math and science communities during their two year commitment can take advantage of a summer internship program coordinated by Teach For America's Math and Science Initiative. By working with the top math and science companies, organizations, and research teams, participants can gain contacts and experiences, in addition to teaching, that will enrich their future plans. All positions are full time and paid. No education coursework required. Our Fall application deadline is November 1, 1999. To get involved immediately, student leaders may apply to serve as the Campaign Coordinator on their campus for the 1999-2000 academic year. In this volunteer position, the Campaign Coordinator works with the Teach For America Western Recruitment Team to create and implement an ambitious grassroots campaign on his/her campus that will involve networking with faculty and other student leaders as well as public speaking, learning campus policies, and securing donations. To receive more information about our teaching positions for graduating seniors or our volunteer positions for current student leaders, please contact Megan Matheny, Western Campaign Director, at 1-800-TFA-1230 ext. 218 or mmatheny@teachforamerica.org One day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.
