UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History

Student Office Assistant Position

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The museum is seeking a student to staff a main office station with a specific schedule to meet position needs. In this position they will greet walk-in visitors; assist with parking information and offer guidance to various sites offices and spaces within the museum. They should have knowledge of the museum and be capable of answering the information telephone extension providing current information on operational hours, exhibits, upcoming events and staff resources.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Typical tasks include:

Reception Management: Monitor and answer intercom phone system, answer museum public information extension.

Mail Management; Assist staff with information on mail services provided by the main office. Distribute campus and US mail, sign for and alert staff to UPS delivery, offer assistance with FedEx and other types of mail services

Miscellaneous: Make copies, general office cleaning, filing and campus errands. Position can include assisting with bulk mailings, event activities or coordinating promotional materials as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability and desire to learn about the museum exhibits, events and programs and provide that information in a confident manner as needed. General knowledge of office equipment including but not limited to a copier and multi-line phone. Capability to communicate and show desire to meet and greet in a friendly and open manner and the ability to multi-task. Prompt arrival and dependability in schedule and communications is a must.

PREFERRED HOURS : Monday and Tuesday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Salary: $8.00 per hour.

Position Description

  • Greet visitors, provide introductions to the museum, answer questions about exhibits, and facilitate conversations about museum content.

Responsibilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of rotating and permanent museum exhibits
  • Ensure the comfort and safety of visitors
  • Ensure the wellbeing of museum exhibits, artifacts, and specimens

  • Capable of three hours of standing and physical activity
  • Willingness to learn new information
  • Able to solve problems and seek assistance when necessary

Training/Additional

  • Attend forums on museum content
  • Participate in interpretive workshops
  • Work schedule of no more than twenty hours a week
  • Minimum wage
  • Weekend hours apply
