RADIOCARBON DATES FROM NATIVE AMERICAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

ON THE OREGON COAST

Madonna L. Moss and Jon M. Erlandson

Department of Anthropology, University of Oregon

Over the course of our research to evaluate archaeological sites on the Oregon Coast for their eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), we obtained a large number of radiocarbon dates. Over a four-year period, we obtained 205 radiocarbon dates from 109 archaeological sites. Many of these sites are now listed on the National Register (Moss and Erlandson 1996), and dates are listed on individual site forms. However, the entire text of the nomination runs over 600 pages, and must be requested from the State Historic Preservation Office. In order to make the dates more easily accessible to Oregon archaeologists, and with the encouragement of CAHO newsletter editor, Pamela Endzweig, we present all the radiocarbon dates we obtained between 1992 and 1996 associated with this project. The dates listed below also comprise the database we used in a recent article about the utility of radiocarbon dating in archaeological surveys (Erlandson and Moss 1999). The editor of American Antiquity did not want to publish the entire date list, so we present it here (Table 1). Also of potential interest to CAHO readers, the published article discusses calibration of dates on marine samples in some detail (Erlandson and Moss 1999:436-437).

The Oregon coast research was funded by Historic Preservation Fund Grants-in-Aid provided by the National Park Service (U.S. Department of Interior) and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, with additional support from the University of Oregon. At the SHPO, we extend our thanks to Leland Gilsen, Kimberly Dunn, and Elisabeth Potter. We are grateful to the Coquille Indian Tribe, Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians, and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz for their support of this work. We also appreciate all the assistance of UO graduate students, particularly Scott Byram, Mark Tveskov, and Rob Losey. Special thanks are due Pamela Endzweig for supporting the publication of this date list.

During 1998-99 a new program of archaeological site evaluation, radiocarbon dating, and NRHP nomination is being conducted by Jon Erlandson, Scott Byram and Rob Losey. The primary focus of this work is to evaluate, map, and radiocarbon date Oregon coast wood stake fishing weirs and traps and add them to the NRHP multiple property submission of 1996.

Note: Calendar dates were derived from the CALIB 3.0.3 calibration program (Stuiver and Reimer1993), with dates presented as a range at one standard deviation, with intercept in parenthesis. Estimated values include an average of +420 + 10 years for 13C/12C ratios on marine or estuarine shell, and an estimated correction for the regional oceanic reservoir effect (delta-R) of 240 + 50 years (Moss and Erlandson 1993). Calendar dates marked by an asterisk have multiple intercepts on the calibration curve.
