Laminations

Laminations are very thin beds. They can form in lakes, where slight variations in the slowly deposited, fine-grained sediment defines different beds. They can also form in fast-moving water that does not produce ripples. The two can usually be distinguished, however, because the lake bed deposits will be very fine-grained.
