Largely because of hydrolysis, most sand deposits consist mostly of quartz. Hydrolysis acts on sedimentary particles throughout the transportation process to turn non-quartz particles into clay. Consequently, the longer and farther sand grains are transported, the richer in quartz they become. These particular sand grains same out of my daughter's shoe.
