Cameo Creations

This page contains a Cameo Creations wall sconce. I have never found another like it. The lady depicted in the sconce is also from the Elizabethan era, a different era than many of the typical portraits . Although my wall sconce had no label, I found her picture on another portrait at an antique store in Indiana. She was Elizabethan indeed. Mary Stuart is better known as Mary, Queen of Scots who was beheaded by her Tudor relative, Elizabeth I . The artist, Nicholas Hilliard, was one of the most celebrated miniaturists (also called limnings) of the Elizabethan era. Originially trained as a jeweler, Hilliard combined "his unerring use of line with a jeweller's exquisiteness in detail, an engraver's elegance in calligraphy, and a unique realization of the individuality of each sitter." - If you have any interesting information about her or the artist that depicted her in this portrait, please e-mail me so I can update my page. The lady in the upper right corner has an original label identifying her as Adelina Patti, a famous opera singer born in Madrid. However, an Ebay vendor had a portrait of her in a different frame but identified her as Princess Lamballe by Nicholas Largelliere. I researched Princess Lamballe and learned that she was a close friend of Marie Antoinette and was literally torn apart by an angry mob during the French Revolution. At least my lady met a much more natural end.
