Neuroscience Open House, 1999

The neuroscience community at the University of Oregon would like to invite you to our Neuroscience Open House which will be held on April 3, 1999, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Huestis Hall, 1425 E. 13th, on the University of Oregon Campus.  The open house is an outreach activity of The Institute of Neuroscience, The University of Oregon and the Society for Neuroscience. The intent is to give you a chance to chat with brain researchers, to see the research labs, to see scientific demonstrations and to feel some of the excitement of contemporary neuroscience.  Everyone is welcome. This is a good activity for parents and their children.

Sixteen different labs will be conducting tours and explaining their work. Each tour will last about 20 minutes, so you will have time to attend 4 or 5 tours in 2 hours, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Tours will leave from the lobby of Huestis Hall every 5 minutes.  At 12:00 noon there will be a public lecture by Dr. Nathan Tublitz, Professor of Biology, titled "The brain: Window to the world."  The lecture will be in Room 100, Willamette Hall.

Our open house is part of a nationwide public education campaign called Brain Awareness Week.  The national campaign is sponsored by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives and the Society for Neuroscience.  It has been estimated that diseases of the nervous system, such as addiction, affective disorders, Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, cost Americans about $580 billion per year. These illnesses, of course, cause human suffering beyond measure.  We hope that you can attend our open house and help spread the word that neuroscience is our best hope of reducing these costs.
