Microcomputer Buyer's Guide

Greetings!
The Microcomputer Services staff has assembled this information to guide University of Oregon users through the maze of purchasing decisions, terminology, and specifications that you'll need to consider, whether you are purchasing a new personal computer or just upgrading the system you currently have.

In the General Guidelines section, we'll be taking a look at some general considerations to get you started in the right direction. We'll present some preliminary questions you'll need to consider and share our purchasing philosophy with you. We'll also discuss your responsibilities as a buyer, and product warranties.

The five sections of this guide each deal with some aspect of purchasing personal computing hardware and software. You'll find sections on buying a complete system, a monitor or panel (display), a printer, and networking hardware and software. If you're just looking for a display, printer, or networking component, you may want to skip ahead to the appropriate section(s).

We like to help folks with pre-purchase decisions! If you have any questions as you read through this guide, please feel free to contact our staff. You can call us at (541) 346-4412 or send an e-mail message to microhelp@lists.uoregon.edu. Our help desk is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday.
