- Crooked River Watershed Council
-
As Executive Director of the
Crooked River Watershed Council I lead a collaborative community-based
organization focused on watershed management. Between 2006 and 2008 I worked
to develop the capacities of the Council and a strategy to grow the Council's portfolio of projects and programs. Working with a variety of
collaborators the Council published the Lower Crooked River
Watershed Assessment in 2008, which gives guidance and direction to the Council on
developing a strategy for watershed restoration in the the Lower Crooked
Watershed. Duing my two years with the Council we secured over $3.5 million
to impliment fish screening and passage projects conduct juniper and uplands management, and
in-stream function and habitat enhancement projects. Funding
was secured from the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board (OWEB), the PGE
Pelton Round Butte Fund, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, the National Fish & Wildlife Foundation, and others. The Council increased staffing from 1.0 to 3.3 FTE, and hire two seasonal technicians for the summer of 2008.

I received my doctorate in 2007 from the Department of Forest Resources at the University of Idaho where I worked with an interdisciplinary team of a National Science Foundation fellows and faculty to study land use change in northern Idaho. In 2003 I received a Master's Degree from the Environmental and Community Studies program at Antioch University Seattle where I studied how sustainability-based organizations develop social capital among their constituencies. I received my Bachelor's degree from the
University of Oregon in 1997 with a double major in Economics and Business
Management. After graduating from the UO I spent a year on a study abroad program
that focused on the relationships between the global economic system,
cultural anthropology, and ecological systems in England, Tanzania, India,
the Philippines, and Mexico.

- Field Instruction
-
For several years I
worked as a field educator teaching primary through higher education
students and adults about Pacific Northwest forest ecology. Working at
several sites in the West Cascades of Oregon I developed and implemented
field-based education curricula to help students understand the network of
linkages among soils, water, and life that together create Pacific Northwest
forest ecosystems. Based primarily from field camps I led implemented
programs for the Multnomah Education Service District, the Oregon Museum of
Science and Industry, the Portland Audubon Society, and Opal Creek Ancient
Forest Center. My experience as a field instructor inspired me to
continue learning, and fostered in me a love for teaching and a strong
connection to the forests of the northwestern Oregon.
- Outdoor Endeavors
-
-
Growing up in Oregon has bred the
outdoors into me. As a kid we spent summers camping in Central
Oregon and the Coast, staying on my grandparents' farm in Southern Oregon,
and exploring Forest Park and nearby Mt. Hood. As an adult I have had
the fortune to hike the Pacific Crest Trail
through Oregon with my wife, visit wild places like the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge, and travel to Africa, Asia, Europe, and Central America.
